1938, University of Milan. Subject: race
On the occasion of the Centenary of the University of Milan and Remembrance Day 2024, we are pleased to invite you and your classes to the exhibition “1938, Régia Università di Milano. Subject: race”, which will be held from 23 to 31 January 2024, in the Aula Magna of the Aula Magna of the University of Milan, via Festa del Perdono 7 in Milan.
The exhibition is an educational experience aimed at shedding light on a dark chapter of our history, revealing the facets of human and intellectual resistance to Fascism. The impact of the 1938 anti-Jewish legislation on university life and the fate of eminent academics will be explored with a section devoted to key documents from the initial census and the implementation of the Racial Laws. Circulars, communications, correspondence and period reports outline the historical context.
The path continues with the narration of the personal and scientific stories of notable academic figures, through a journey from joining fascism to the resistance struggle, from persecution to the hope of salvation. These include Mario Attilio Levi, Mario Segre and Carlo Foà, whose journey through that turbulent era reveals stories of courage, compromise and resilience.
In addition, the exhibition highlights the story of anti-fascists such as Fabio Luzzatto and Piero Martinetti, highlighting their opposition to the injustices of the regime. Rare documents, including letters, attestations and apocryphal records, testify to their commitment and resistance.
Finally, the exhibition is enriched by some insights into the impact of the racial laws on the student population and the attitude of Italian philosophy at the time.
The exhibition is organised by the Department of Historical Studies and the P. Martinetti Department of Philosophy.
Curators: Emanuele Edallo, Researcher at the Department of Historical Studies (University of Milan), Luca Natali, Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy ‘Piero Martinetti’ (University of Milan), Giovanni Rota, First Researcher at the Institute for the History of Modern Philosophical and Scientific Thought (CNR Milan-Naples) and Yuri Gallo, Archivist at the Library of Philosophy (University of Milan).
